Citizens for Responsible Outdoor Advertising understand that progress is inevitable in our society. Change happens every day. But when change threatens our health and safety, and destroys our natural and cultural heritage, it’s time to Take Action!
It is a fact that outdoor billboards need to distract our attention to be effective. Today’s outdoor billboards can be visually arresting, totally ubiquitous, and in your face. In fact many of the complaints from Lower Mainland residents sound like they came right off the Outdoor Advertising Association of America web site: "Outdoor signs are permanently on display, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, visible by day, illuminated at night. People can not switch off a poster, change channels or turn the page, and the posters are right where they can't be avoided."
By reducing a message down to its simplest form, billboards profit from the visual distraction and easy play on the viewer's emotions, "delivering powerful messages" as the Association puts it, "which remain in the subconscious mind" And all the while, citizens and visiting tourists are trying to negotiate through speeding traffic on a non level multi lane highway over a vital bridge connection with multiple exits. This is not the time or the place for outdoor advertising to be testing our subconscious.
Citizens for Responsible Outdoor Advertising also believe that when we degrade our surroundings, we also degrade our sense of who we are, where we came from and the values we hold in common.
Scenic beauty has been a powerful force in shaping our history, culture, philosophical and spiritual traditions. We believe that the Lower Mainland’s scenic heritage is fundamentally important to the continuation of our individual and collective well-being, to our economic prosperity, to a healthy environment, and to the quality of everyday life.
